In Contours, I prime my canvases in random and unpredictable ways, and let the natural mottling of the paint help dictate the compositions. The bottom layer of the canvas becomes the foreground, and by painting only the negative space, abstract and flattened scenes materialize. Unlike the pre-planned method I use in my other work, I design and paint these spontaneously according to what the patterns evoke in my mind, and I never know what the final product will look like until it's done.
